DECADES LATER: Meresa Hammonds is positively identified as the #YonkersJaneDoe found deceased in a #Yonkers alley on June 27, 1992 And Killed By Confessed Serial Killer

DNA CONFIRMATION: Now the ugly crack cocaine murder story has been confirmed with DNA evidence.

YONKERS PD: Known as the “Yonkers Jane Doe“, the deceased has been identified as 31-year-old Meresa Hammonds of New Jersey – so we are closing the case.

PUBLIC KNOWLEDGE: But much information about her life has been known for years and this is not much of a revelation by the police.

One of seven children, Meresa was born in Kentucky in April 1961. She spent the majority of her childhood in California, before relocating to Michigan when she was older. She eventually moved to New Jersey, where she and her sister worked as models.

At the time of her death, she was the mother of two sons.

Meresa is one of five victims of serial killer #RobertShulman, who confessed to her murder following his arrest on April 6, 1996.

According to Shulman, he brought her back to his apartment, where they used crack cocaine.

He then blacked out.

He claimed that once he came to, Meresa was dead.

He then proceeded to dismember her body before transporting her to the alley where she was discovered.

Shulman was sentenced to death in relation to another murder, but his sentence was changed to life without parole after New York overturned the death penalty in 2004.

On April 13, 2006, he passed away of natural causes in prison.

THE BRONX: More Inmate Suicides At Rikers Island This Year Than In The Last Five Years

Two correction officers who spoke to The New York Post on the condition of anonymity recounted a recent suicide attempt in early November where a teenager facing murder charges tied a noose to a light fixture and hanged himself in his cell

NEW YORK POST: Only 27% of Rikers staff have completed suicide prevention refresher training In the last year, six inmates killed themselves while in DOC custody, which is more detainee suicides than the past five years combined and the most seen since 2003 when the average jail population was 14,533, nearly triple the amount it is now, according to city data.

Rikers Island has long been a dumping ground for the Big Apple’s mentally ill and the majority of the jail’s population has been diagnosed with some sort of mental health illness…..

“Happy Holidays! I am sending warm wishes and positive energy your way as we enter the holiday season.

The last two years have had a huge impact on our community as we navigated a pandemic, and some days fared better than others.

I hope that you find comfort and peace amongst loved ones this week and find time to enjoy good company as we reflect on where we are and where we would like to go.

As a district and nation at large the historical significance of Thanksgiving can not be lost on us.

For example, here in NY-16 we gather on the land of the Wappinger and Munsee Lenape.

American history and the traditions we have come to know have roots that continue to impact the Native American community today.

It is my hope that while we are with our families, we take time to reflect and acknowledge the history.

In our Jewish community, neighbors will also begin celebrating Hanukkah on November 28th. Hanukkah Semeach to all who observe the holiday – may the season bring you peace and light.

To all of our neighbors here in New York’s 16th Congressional District, peace and love.

As always, feel free to reach out to my office if I can be a resource or for more information.”

JOURNAL NEWS ON MSN: From prison to running a nonprofit, this Yonkers man hopes to change lives

John Cabrera and Jonathan Alvarez, co-founded 914United, which focuses on education and mentorship in underserved communities. Here they are pictured at the backyard of Alvarez’s apartment, Nov. 18, 2021. Alvarez spent his last few teenage years and all of his 20s incarcerated.

Jonathan Alvarez started a support group and volunteering with My Brother’s Keeper when the pandemic hit.

That’s when Alvarez and John Cabrera, a lifelong friend, decided to help however they could. They raised money and started buying food and PPE and donating to essential workers.

People started to recognize them and the work they were doing.

“We just didn’t have a name yet,” Alvarez said.

That work was the basis for what became Alvarez and Cabrera’s nonprofit, 914United, which focuses on providing education and mentorship to underserved communities in the Lower Hudson Valley….
