“If you’re confident about your strength, you don’t need to show me by putting somebody else down.”

Former President Barack Obama and Golden State Warrior Steph Curry spoke about the importance of creating vulnerable spaces for young boys and men, specifically of color, at the annual My Brother’s Keeper summit in Oakland.

“The notion that somehow defining yourself as a man is dependent on, are you able to put somebody else down… able to dominate… that is an old view,” Obama said.

The initiative, which was launched in 2014, is aimed at closing the opportunity gap for boys of color by connecting them with mentors in their desired fields.

Obama, who introduced himself as “Michelle’s Husband” and referred to Curry as “Ayesha’s Husband,” was surrounded on stage by several young men who traveled from Yonkers, New York, Los Angeles, and Nashville.

Yonkers My Brother’s Keeper (MBK) groundbreaking leaders will present their insights and experiences guiding a model MBK community on February 19 and 20 at the Obama Foundation’s My Brother’s Keeper’s Alliance first national convening in Oakland, California.

Hundreds of young people and leaders from the growing national MBK network, “will join President Obama in celebrating the achievements of organizations and communities leading the way in reducing youth violence, growing impactful mentorship programs, and improving life outcomes for boys and young men of color,” according to the Obama Foundation.

REAL ESTATE: Yonkers IDA approves resolutions to provide financial incentives for residential projects

Yonkers IDA Approves Financial Incentives

The Board of Directors of the Yonkers Industrial Development Agency (IDA) approved resolutions of intent to provide financial incentives for three major residential projects that represent a total private investment of over $391 million.

It is estimated that the three projects would create 1,300 construction jobs and add 1,000 new units of rental housing to the city’s residential market.

At an IDA’s meeting, Ginsburg Development Cos. presented plans for two developments in the Ludlow section of the city.

Ludlow Point, a $199.7 million investment, will be the centerpiece development of the new Ludlow Station Area Master Plan to be created by the City of Yonkers. Located at 150 Downing St., the project consists of 520 proposed residential units in two ten-story and two eleven-story towers.

The unit mix will be comprised of 80 studios, 320 one-bedrooms and 120 two-bedroom apartments. Building amenities will include a club lounge, fitness center, swimming pool, business center, bike racks and tenant storage lockers.

Ten percent of the units (52) are to be affordable under the Yonkers Affordable Housing Ordinance.

The Ludlow Street frontage will feature 10,330 s/f of retail space to be marketed to restaurant and neighborhood retailers.

Ludlow Point will feature a new Promenade Park overlooking the Hudson River and the cliffs of the Palisades that will connect to O’Boyle Park, which will be refurbished by GDC. A pioneering project,

Ludlow Point will represent the largest private investment made in Southwest Yonkers in decades and will be an important gateway to the Yonkers Downtown and Waterfront District.

It is estimated that the project will create approximately 600 construction jobs and 14 permanent jobs.

IDA financial incentives for the project include $4.752 million in sales tax exemptions and $2.52 million in mortgage recording tax exemptions

The other GDC project, 70 Pier Street, is a $14.2 million mixed-use building to be constructed on the south side of Abe Cohen Plaza at the Ludlow Metro-North Train Station.

It will be a new gateway entrance statement to the Ludlow neighborhood of Southwest Yonkers.

The project consists of a four-story building containing 36 residential rental apartments with a unit mix of 6 studios, 18 one-bedrooms and 12 two-bedrooms.

Under the requirements of the Yonkers Affordable Housing Ordinance, one unit will be offered as affordable. In addition to the building’s lobby, the ground floor will include 3,125 square feet of neighborhood retail and indoor parking for 35 cars. Building amenities will include a lobby club lounge and a roof deck.

The city and GDC will jointly apply for New York State grants to renovate Abe Cohen Plaza concurrently with the development of 70 Pier St.

70 Pier is part of the larger Master Planned redevelopment of the Ludlow Station Area being undertaken by the city.

70 Pier St. will create approximately 60 construction jobs and four permanent jobs.

IDA financial incentives for the project include $310,625 in sales tax exemptions and $180,000 in mortgage recording tax exemptions.

The third project approved by the IDA is 57 Alexander St., a $177.3 million residential development featuring 440 apartments in a seven-story building with 443 parking spaces.

The project, which is being developed by Rose Associates, would include 25,000 s/f of new waterfront open space including a waterfront walkway that will provide access to the Hudson River waterfront.

The open space would have a walking promenade with seating and landscaping.

Located within the Alexander St. Urban Renewal area and part of the Alexander St. Master Plan, the project is an integral part of a conceptual land use plan for redevelopment of a critical segment of the city’s Hudson River waterfront.

The project replaces an area that is now defunct and largely inaccessible to the public.

It is estimated that the project will create approximately 631 construction jobs and 10 full time jobs.

IDA financial incentives for the project include $3.807 million in sales tax exemptions and $2.073 million in mortgage recording tax exemptions.

The three projects have not yet received approvals from the city. Ludlow Point and 70 Pier St. will be part of a year-long Master Planning process with the city to develop a new plan for the entire Ludlow Station area.

In other business, the IDA gave final approval for financial incentive to Momentum Realty Acquisitions for its plans to convert a light-industrial building at 222 & 252C Lake St. into an office and entertainment complex called

The Mill. The 55,000 s/f building, which had been damaged by a fire in 2017, is to be completely renovated in two phases.

IDA financial incentives for the $11.7 million project include $240,513 in sales tax exemptions and $137,147 in mortgage recording tax exemptions.

The project is being done as part of the Yonkers Opportunity Zone which is designed to spur development and create jobs.

Established in 1982, the Yonkers Industrial Development Agency is a public benefit corporation that provides business development incentives to enhance economic development and job growth in the city.

YONKERS TRIBUNE: Yonkers Congressman Eliot Engel And House Dems Reintroduce Assault Weapons Ban

WASHINGTON, DC —- February 18, 2019 — Congressman Eliot Engel, a member of the House Gun Violence Prevention Task Force, and a record 190 House Democrats have reintroduced H.R. 1296, the Assault Weapons Ban of 2019, legislation that would ban the sale, manufacture, or possession of new military-style assault weapons.

The bill, authored by Rep. David Cicilline and originally cosponsored by Engel, would reinstate the ban on assault weapons that was allowed to lapse 15 years ago under Republican leadership.

“Last week marked the one year anniversary since 17 lives were taken by a weapon of war at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. Nearly 40,000 Americans have been killed by guns since then. The American people, our children, our communities—we’ve all endured enough horror from gun violence,” Rep. Engel said.

“Mass shootings have become so common”…..

YONKERS PD: An Inerview With Detective Phil Yizar

In recognition of #BlackHistoryMonth, today the #YonkersPD is highlighting Major Case Detective Phil Yizar!:

– Tell us a little about yourself

I was born in Mount Vernon, New York and moved to Yonkers when I was 3 years old. I lived in Schroeder Street until I was 8 years old and then my family moved to Vineyard Avenue here in Yonkers. Throughout the years I attended Martin Luther King School Elementary School, Our Lady of the Rosary Elementary School, St. Joseph’s Elementary School, Sacred Heart High School and I graduated from Roosevelt High School. In 1994 I joined the US Army with a three year commitment as an Avenger Crew-member (14S). I went to boot camp at Fort Sill Oklahoma and attended advanced individual training at Fort Bliss near El Paso, Texas. I served one year in Korea at Camp Hovey and finished out my military career at Fort Drum near Watertown New York which was approximately a twenty minute ride from the Canadian border. In 2005 I joined the Yonkers Police Department. Throughout the years I have served as a police officer in the 1st and 4th precincts. In addition I have served as a School Resource Officer, worked in the Community Affairs Division and I am currently assigned to the Detective Division.

– What did you do before you became a Police Officer?

Throughout my teenage years and early adulthood I worked with youth. After returning home from the military I worked as a youth counselor at St. Christopher’s, an adolescent development facility in Dobbs Ferry, New York. I was then hired as a school safety officer by the Yonkers Board of Education. While employed by the Board of Education I was assigned to Mark Twain Middle School and Yonkers Middle School. During the summer month’s I worked as the Assistant Director of Camp Ray’s, a summer camp ran by the City of Yonkers Department of Parks and Recreation.

– Why did you become a Police Officer?

In most of the jobs I had, I always worked to help others. I wanted to give back to my community.

– What do you like most about being a Police Officer?

I enjoy working as a Detective. As a Patrol Officer in most cases you take the initial report and move on to the next call. As a Detective I enjoy thoroughly following up on investigations and incident. I work with an awesome group of Detectives who are very knowledgeable and great at what they do.

– What advice would you give a young adult thinking about joining Law Enforcement?

For those who are serious about a career in law Enforcement I would suggest they prepare for the test (written & physical). The written test is very competitive so a high score is necessary in order to get called. In addition, upon passing the written test there’s physical agility test that consist of push ups, sit ups and a 1.5 run. It’s important to be prepared for the agility test because if you fail any of the 3 physical test you will be disqualified and not eligible to be hired. Be prepared.

NEWSLETTER: City Council President Mike Khader’s Update

MESSAGE FROM MIKE
Dear Neighbor,

Every February we celebrate two very important causes – Black History Month and American Heart Month. In celebrating Black History Month, we recognize the many contributions and achievements of African Americans which helped build this nation, while never forgetting their struggles for social justice and equality. During heart month, we seek to raise awareness about cardiovascular health which, if neglected is one of the leading causes of death in our country.

That is why I am proud to be co-sponsoring events that highlight these two causes. First, Mayor Mike Spano and I will be offering a day of education and consultation about heart health for the employees of the City of Yonkers. Health is wealth, as they say, and should never be taken for granted!
Second, my office, Legislator Chris Johnson, Councilwoman Shanae Williams, and the Yonkers NAACP are proud to host a Black History Month event, celebrating African American Music and its impact on the human experience. The event will take place on Friday March 1st, from 6-8 P.M. at the Yonkers Riverfront Library. All are welcome and encouraged to attend. Flyer is attached below.

Never forget that my office is here to serve the hardworking families of Yonkers.
Please feel free to reach out to my office with any suggestions or concerns about how we can help to improve the quality of life of those who call Yonkers home.
My office can be reached at 914-377-6060. You can also e-mailcouncilpresident@yonkersny.gov.
Best wishes,
Mike
