STATEMENT: From City Council President Mike Khader About Youth Employment In Yonkers

Opportunities For Young People

“This week we hosted our first annual Youth Employment Workshop hosted at St. Peters-St. Denis School in partnership with a number of local non-profits and organizations.

The workshop began as an idea after hearing from parents and community leaders about the need for our youth to stay engaged and do something productive during the summer months.

I saw an opportunity to bridge the gap between young adults and the many available jobs in Yonkers – by connecting them with organizations that can help empower our youth to find employment this summer and beyond.

We had a packed house of interested youth who met with our partners to learn about the tools available to them that would help in their search.
In addition to helping our youth find employment,

I equally believe that Yonkers deserves recognition as a place worthy of investment by major companies.

Yonkers is primed to stand among other economic powerhouses and contribute to our burgeoning economy.

Not only as Council President, but as a father and life-long resident of Yonkers, I promise to continue working my hardest for our great city.

By investing in our youth, we can ensure that Yonkers will always stay hard at work, be an attractive option for businesses to invest in, and a place where people can come to work and raise a family.

The message is clear, Yonkers is ready to work, and we are willing to invest in our kids and future.”

SLAPP LAWSUIT: The Losing Thin Skinned Yorktown Supervisor Sues Executive Director Of Yonkers Not For Profit And A Westchester Newspaper Over Constitutionally Protected Opinion Piece

SLAPPs are Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation. These damaging suits chill free speech and healthy debate by targeting those who criticize political insiders.
Letter to the editor is the cause of a meritless lawsuits filed against a resident for exercising their First Amendment rights

SOUR GRAPES: The out of touch Republican loser of the Yorktown Supervisor’s election, Michael Grace, has filed what many say is a strategic lawsuit against public participation (SLAPP) that is intended to censor, intimidate, and silence his critics by burdening them with the cost of a legal defense.

TRUMP LIKE: The hyper sensitive Conservative Republican lawyer is resident and a newspaper, calling a letter to the editor critical of him libelous.

NOTHING TO SEE HERE MOVE ALONG: The TEA Party like Republican lawyer upset ate being criticized in a letter, in the January 8th issue of the Northern Westchester Examiner about him and former Republican State Senator Terrance Murphy, who also lost in the last election

The letter charged that Michael Grace had made “self-enrichment deals behind the scenes that did not benefit the town.”

It specifically pointed to a development behind his law offices on Underhill Avenue.

QUESTIONABLE DEAL: The mixed-use development, which spans four properties and includes a 40,000-square-foot building, involves the Oversensitive Michael Grace’s land while he was still the town supervisor.

POLITICAL CRITIC: There is history between Grace and the critical letter-writer, Mohegan Lake resident Melvin Tanzman, who is the Executive Director Of Westchester Disabled On The Move In Yonkers,

POLITICAL OPPONENT: Two years ago, Melvyn Tanzman unsuccessfully sought the Yorktown Democratic Committee’s endorsement to run against the easily offended Michael Grace for supervisor.

NASTY SUPERVISOR: In an October 2017 op-ed that appeared in Yorktown News, where the easily hurt Michael Grace exercised his constatutional protected first amendment rights to opine that Melvyn Tanzman belonged to the “truly ugly fringes” of the local Democratic Party.

SCARING CRITICS: Many say that Republican Michael Grace is rumored to be running again for supervisor this year and he doesn’t want anyone talking about the land deal with now state Republican Senate Staffer Terrance Murphy.

A SOLUTION IS NEEDEDE: Most legal experts say there should be an early dismissal of merit less SLAPP lawsuits filed against people for the exercise of First Amendment rights.

The acronym “SLAPP” stands for “Strategic Lawsuit Against Public Participation – a phrase coined by two law school professors in the late 1980s.

They identified a trend of retaliatory lawsuits brought to intimidate and silence opponents and critics who had spoken out in the public sphere, typically on land use and development issues.

In Yonkers there has been a conspiracy among political operatives to flood the local publisher of the Yonkers Tribune, Hezi Aris, with multiple Strategic Lawsuit Against Public Participation and even going so far as having newly Republican councilman John Rubbo going so far as to encourage and threaten other such lawsuits against other local publishers

The actual resolution of the plaintiff’s claims – for defamation, tortious interference or related theories – was a secondary motivation at best.

Govenor Andrew Cuomo and Yonkers’ Democratic Majority Senate Leader Andrea Stewart Cousins needs to protect the free flow of information to voters by enacting strong anti-SLAPP statutes were proposed to provide a quick, effective and inexpensive mechanism to combat such Trump suits.

Anti-SLAPP laws enable those who are the subject of a SLAPP suit to seek early dismissal and oftentimes get their legal fees reimbursed.

New York has Anti-SLAPP laws, but they need to be further strengthened to protect the political process from wealthy and abusive touchy political operatives that seek to silence diverse voices in the community.

The fact an anti-SLAPP law is on the books in a jurisdiction can also help to deter potential litigants from filing retaliatory lawsuits in the first place.

As of January 2019, 27 other states have anti-SLAPP statutes: Arizona, Arkansas, California, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Texas, Tennessee, Utah, Vermont.

In addition there are anti-SLAPP statutes in the District of Columbia and Guam.

KABOOM: That Noise You Just Heard Is Mayor Mike Spano And Yonkers Incumbent Council Members Crapping Their Pants, As Cuomo Reduces Number Of Primary Signatures For Petitions By 25 Percent

Gov Cuomo takes steps to include more New Yorkers in the political process

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Governor Andrew Coumo Reduces Petition Signature Requirement for Party Positions to 3 Percent of Enrolled Voters of the Party

PRESS RELEASE: Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today signed two pieces of p following the recent change in New York’s primary election date. The first bill (A.2570/S.2862) temporarily reduces the number of signatures required on designating petitions by 25 percent for candidates running for public offices to be filed in 2019.

ALBANY: The second bill (A.2693/S.2699) reduces the petition signature requirement for ward, town, city, or county party committees to 3 percent of enrolled voters of the party.

QUOTE: “New York has made significant progress in modernizing our voting laws and ensuring fairness in our electoral system with the passage of key legislation this year,” Governor Cuomo said.

“These changes further our progress by easing the burden for potential candidates who may not have had the chance to adjust to earlier petition dates this election, helping to ensure that candidates who want to run for office have the chance to do so.”

On January 24, Governor Cuomo signed legislation reunifying state, local and federal (non-presidential) primary elections to be held on the 4th Tuesday in June, effective immediately.

Because of the imminent changes in the political calendar necessary to meet the requirements for a June primary, candidates for local offices in 2019 may be unable to obtain the amount of signatures required to appear on the ballot.

These bills will temporarily reduce those signature requirements, ensuring ballot access for candidates in the 2019 elections.

Senator Jamaal T. Bailey said,  “Encouraging civic engagement is crucial and important in order to increase participation in government. I want to thank Governor Cuomo for signing my bill, S2699 into law. This bill will decrease the number of required signatures for the county committee and make it easier for New Yorkers to get involved in our political process at the grassroots level.”

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Yonkers Landlord with A Dozen Warrants for Fire/Building Violations Incarcerated

PRESS RELEASE: Another of the City of Yonkers’ top scofflaws and landlords, Ismael Vargas, was incarcerated today after avoiding a dozen warrants resulting from fire and housing code summonses issued by the Yonkers Fire Department and Department of Housing & Buildings.

YONKERS: Ismael Vargas was taken into custody by court officers, transported to the Westchester County Jail and is being held for an appearance in Yonkers City Court for code violations at the properties he owns or once owned, pending the posting of bail.

QUOTE: “Today’s arrest proves that City means business when it comes to these serial scofflaws,” said Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano. “We will continue to find these individuals and hold them accountable for their abuse of the system and mistreatment of the tenants until justice is served. We owe that to the residents.”

Mayor Spano noted that in recent weeks approximately 20 landlords kept their City Court dates to answer for various building violations, whereas in the past, no-shows were a common occurrence. “Word is getting around that if bad landlords don’t show up to answer for violations, the Police Department’s Warrant Squad will make them show up,” added Mayor Spano.

Vargas has a long history of non-compliance with warrants on his multiple properties that include 63-65 Jackson Street, 25 Radford Street, 102 McLean Avenue and 51 Lawrence Street.

Violations at these properties have included no certificate of occupancy for single room conversion, illegal open wiring, unsanitary conditions and numerous other violations of the Fire and Buildings Codes.

Today’s arrest comes after the arrest of the city’s top scofflaw Aurielo Assuncao last month.

Assuncao had over 70 fire and building summonses issued to him over the last eight years.

Mayor Spano and Yonkers Councilwoman Corazon Pineda-Isaac in January announced plans to target landlords who ignore fire and building codes and subject their properties to condemnation.

According to proposed legislation, should the condition of a building rise to the need for relocation of its residents as a result of negligent or intentional acts of the building owner and the City of Yonkers incurs expenses to house and feed the tenants, the landlord must reimburse costs incurred by the city.

There are currentlyover 75 property owners listed as repeat offenders of Yonkers Fire and Building Codes.
