GOVERNOR CUOMO; When Westchester County Get The Number Of Coronavirus Deaths And Hospitalizations Down.

BIG PLANS >>> Ryan Deffenbaugh: “New York’s film studios are betting big on a quick rebound for the industry when production returns from its pandemic-induced hiatus.

Expansion plans from Kaufman Astoria Studios and Steiner Studios in Brooklyn are set to continue once construction is allowed, and developers for new studios in Queens and #Yonkers confirmed their plans are on track.

The studios’ leaders face dual questions: When can construction return, and when can filming return?

‘We won’t be in the first wave of business to reopen, but I think we could come in the next batch,’ said Doug Steiner, chairman of Steiner Studios.

‘We are focused on making it work and making it safe.’

As consumers burn through shows on Netflix and Hulu, ‘the backlog for content is huge,’ Steiner said”…..

THE UNDEFEATED: Andre Harrell was hip-hop’s blackest record man

From 1983 to 1995, if it was unapologetically black and cool, Harrell had a hand in it. He oversaw the explosion of Teddy Riley’s new jack swing sound (personified on Guy’s eponymous 1988 debut), a swaggering, sexy amalgamation of soul and gospel that would attract the attention of the King of Pop, Michael Jackson, a few years later.

Harrell signed a fun-loving rap crew from #MountVernon, New York, billed as Heavy D & The Boyz, who were led by a charismatic, rotund emcee respected by both hard-core heads and parents who viewed hip-hop as too profane.

More platinum hits came with R&B heartthrob Al B. Sure!He recruited an around-the-way girl from #Yonkers, New York, named Mary J. Blige, who arguably became the seminal female vocalist of her time.

Between Harrell, the queen of hip-hop soul and a young Uptown intern-turned-starmaker named Sean “Puffy” Combs, they merged two stylistically clashing genres and made R&B cool again….

YONKERS FREE PRESS >>> YONKERS STRONG: New York State Board Of Regents Names CSEE As A “Recognition School” For The 6th Straight Year

PHOTO >>> ONE OF NEW YORK’S BEST: The Charter School of Educational Excellence Among select group of “exemplary public schools that demonstrate that all students can achieve at high levels with the right supports and resources,” Regents Chancellor says

YONKERS PROUD: The Charter School of Educational Excellence (CSEE) serves children in #Yonkers, the Bronx and Westchester County, and already is one of the region’s highest performing tuition-free, public schools.

YONKERS, NY – Now the Charter School of Educational Excellence been recognized by the New York State Board of Regents as a “recognition school” for the sixth straight year. #CSEE is continuing to accept applications from outside Yonkers for the 2020-21 school year.

QUOTE: “These are exemplary public schools that demonstrate that all students can achieve at high levels with the right supports and resources,” Board of Regents Chancellor #BettyRosa said in a news release late last week.“Recognition Schools help to ensure equity for all children across New York State. The Regents and I are grateful to all of the teachers and administrators who, in concerted effort with their school communities, are guiding our students toward success.”

“Recognition schools are the highest performing and rapidly improving schools across the state,” Interim Commissioner #ShannonTahoe said in the same news release.“Recognition Schools across the state demonstrate the relentless commitment of teachers, administrators, staff and parents, without whom this growth would not have been possible.”

This is the 6th straight year the Regents have recognized CSEE in this select group. (Note: the designation was changed this year from Reward School to Recognition School.)The award comes as CSEE continues to deliver strong remote teaching and learning during the COVID-19 shutdown, with average student attendance at 95 percent. All academic and extracurricular programs are continuing, including CSEE’s unique partnerships with the Giants, Jets, Knicks and the nation’s top orthopedics and sports medicine hospital, the Hospital for Special Surgery in Manhattan.

CSEE has ensured that all students have access to educational technology, including laptops and WiFi.

“We thank the Board of Regents, Chancellor Rosa and Interim Commissioner Tahoe for this honor,” CSEE Board Chair and Founder #EduardoLaGuerre said.“It’s a tribute to our hard-working teachers, school leaders, coaches, board members and all our staff, and of course to our scholars, their parents and entire families. Everyone in the CSEE family is dedicated to learning, growth and development of the whole child.”

CSEE Superintendent Cindy Lopez, in an email to staff, said: “It is because of you and your dedication and unwavering faith in our work as a team, faith in our students and families that CSEE has once again received recognition from the state as being a highly effective school. I cannot wait for us to be together, back in our buildings so that we may celebrate.”

To be identified as a Recognition School under the federal Every Student Succeeds Act, a school must:

● have an accountability status of Good Standing;

● have a Level 4 for the Combined Composite Performance and Growth indicator for elementary and middle schools or a Level 4 for the Combined Composite Performance and Graduation Rate for high schools for the All Students group;

● not have a Level 1 for any accountability indicator (English language arts (ELA) and mathematics progress; Chronic Absenteeism; English language Proficiency; College, Career, and Civic Readiness for High Schools) for the All Students group;

● not have any subgroups that were identified as Potential Targeted Support and Improvement (PTSI) based on 2018-19 school year results; and

● not have a 2018-19 Participation Rate for ELA or Math for the All Students group that is less than 95%. If a school did not have enough students to receive a participation rate, the school is still eligible to be identified as a Recognition School.

CSEE educates some 850 students in grades K-9 and will grow to K-12 in the next three years.

Upon completion of its new, privately funded high school campus, CSEE will be serving approximately 1,150 students.Parent demand is very high, with some 500 students on CSEE’s waiting list.

YONKERS TRIBUNE: Engel-Led Education Funding for $5 Billion to NY Included in HEROES Act

#Yonkers Congressman #EliotEngel is pleased to announce that thanks to his efforts with the New York Congressional Delegation, New York is in line to receive an additional $5 billion in funds to help support the state’s public education system as part of the HEROES Act.

Last month, Congressman Engel led the New York Congressional Delegation in a letter to House Leadership asking for increased education funding for New York as part of the phase 4 coronavirus aid package, later named the HEROES Act.

House Leaders heeded the call, adding $5 billion for New York on top of the over $2 billion already provided to the state via the CARES Act.

Without additional federal assistance, New York’s public education system faces severe education layoffs and program reductions.

“As a former educator, I understand how critical it is to always fund our state’s public education system, but especially during these uncertain times,” Rep. Engel said.

“Our public school teachers are doing truly remarkable work under extremely difficult circumstances. They deserve our full support and I was proud to lead the New York Delegation in this fight to protect them. The HEROES Act includes$5 billion in education funding for New York’s public education system, more than double the funding we received in the CARES Act, and will play a pivotal role in preventing education layoffs and program reductions. These funds will not only be used to prevent harmful cuts, but also for needed resources such as remote learning technology, wifi hot spots, implementing summer school sessions, as well as professional development training for educators, and childcare reimbursements for school districts that have had to take on these costs. The time to act on behalf of our New York schools is now. We need to pass this bill quickly.”….

YONKERS CARES: Yonkers girl delivers snacks in support of health care workers

Brianna Meegan delivering snacks to health care workers

YONKERS, NY: An eight-year-old girl is lending a helping hand to frontline health care workers during the pandemic by delivering treats and snacks.

#BriannaMeegan of Yonkers wanted to support frontline and health care workers who are treating Covid-19 patients.

With her mother #FidelmaBartley Meegan’s help, they launched a Facebook page in March and so far they have raised almost $3,400.

They have used the donations to buy candy, chips and protein bars for staff at six local hospitals, including Saint Joseph’s Medical Center, which received a delivery on April 14.

“They’re just amazed. They’re very happy and very appreciative,” said Fidelma, who explained that the distribution of treats has helped Brianna cope with being separated from all her school friends.

“It really puts a smile on her face. She stays in the car with a mask during the delivery, but she can see how happy the people are.”

Brianna and Fidelma are still collecting funds and their hope is to do another round of snack delivery to the six hospitals they’ve supported. Fidelma said the deliveries have brought some medical workers to tears.

“Our staff was very touched by Brianna’s efforts,” said Lorraine Horgan, Vice President of External Affairs at Saint Joseph’s. “Our dedicated and heroic staff have been working tirelessly providing high-quality care to the community we serve throughout this unprecedented pandemic and Brianna’s loving gesture really moved them and served as a reminder of how grateful the community is for all they are doing to defeat Covid-19.”

Brianna, her mother Fidelma and Saint Joseph’s officials are available for interviews.

JOURNAL NEWS: Zip code data pinpoints COVID-19 hot spots around Westchester County

PHOTO: #JoeDesiena with The City of Yonkers Department of Public Works, use a hose to disinfect a bus stop along South Broadway in Yonkers
The 10701 zip code has been become a swath of #Yonkers that has been ensnared by the virus.

As of early May, more than a quarter of cases–1,948–had come from that section of the city.

The next highest number of cases came from the 10705 zip code with 1,302 cases.
As of Tuesday, there were 6,522 cases in the city.

Mayor Mike Spano said the hardest hit neighborhoods are in west and southwest Yonkers, which are the most densely populated sections of the city and have a high Latino population that has documented and undocumented residents.

#MayorSpano said breaking down the number of cases by zip code is a necessity to slow the virus’ spread.

Once the city had firm numbers, they informed state officials who set up a testing site, within walking distance for residents who live in the 10701 zip code, #MikeSpano said.

YONKERS TRIBUNE: Best vs. Goliath: Open Letter to Voters in the City of Yonkers

KAREN BEST: What do you do when someone tells you that you have to wait to follow your dream?

Consider that person is viewed as the gatekeeper to that dream.

Do you “wait your turn”?

Do you “get in line”?

Do you “play the game”?

Or do you persist?

I was in that position when I decided that I wanted to become a Yonkers City Court Judge.

In the January issue of the Yonkers Rising, Yonkers Democratic Chairman Thomas Meier stated, “You don’t just wake up one morning and say, ‘I want to be a judge.’”

My first thought when I read that quote was, “Why not?” He may have been referring to me when he made that statement because I chose to run in a manner he considers to be the wrong way.

I did not become a district leader, I did not pay to attend numerous Yonkers Democratic Party events, I did not work for other candidates, nor did

I “bow down and kiss his ring.” I chose to keep my money, my dignity, my integrity, and my respect.

I chose to fight a battle that has been deemed impossible, which is winning a Yonkers election without the establishment leaders’ approval.
In the aforementioned issue of the Yonkers Rising, Meier also stated, “Most Yonkers Democrats don’t want a primary”

Fortunately, the Chairman cannot speak for most of Yonkers Democrats; they will speak for themselves when they cast their votes next month in the primary we have a right to hold.

I hope Yonkers Democrats will cast a vote for me, for someone that dared to face a mountain and climb it; because by voting for me, that is the kind of person you can expect to ensure justice in this city.
I cannot say that forging ahead towards the Democratic primary on June 23rd has been easy.

I have spent a lot of my own money and I have faced opposition from various people along the way. However, I continue to look forward to the primary because my campaign has become bigger than me.

For me the Best 4 Yonkers City Court Judge Campaign has become a symbol of what I have done for other people throughout my career in Yonkers.

I spent years of my career in Yonkers City Court advocating for the rights of others; advocating for the underdog.

Now, the underdog is me. I hope you join me in this movement for real social and economic justice in this city we call home.

Best regards,

Judge Karen Best
