The SPCA of Westchester and My Sisters’ Place, a local domestic violence agency in Yonkers, have been working together to make it possible for victims to leave their abusers, knowing their pets will also be placed in a safe setting

For more information on The Pet Safety Program and the SPCA of Westchester’s other programs and services, please visit spca914.org.

The SPCA of Westchester has received a grant from The Rachael Ray Foundation™ to expand the SPCA’s Pet Safety Program, a program created to help pets of domestic violence victims while their owners seek safe housing.

“This funding will allow us to expand our partnership with domestic violence agencies in Westchester and provide a safe alternative for victims of domestic violence who need to protect their companion animals. It couldn’t have come at a better time with domestic violence cases sadly on the rise during quarantine,” said Shannon Laukhuf, executive director.

Since 2008, the SPCA of Westchester and My Sisters’ Place, a local domestic violence agency in Yonkers, have been working together to make it possible for victims to leave their abusers, knowing their pets will also be placed in a safe setting.

Often victims will remain in an abusive situation to protect their beloved pets when they cannot find a domestic violence shelter who will allow animals in. Funding from The Rachael Ray Foundation will also help pay for medical costs associated with animals who are often victims themselves.

“During the coronavirus pandemic, we are seeing victims more isolated at home than before, and the severity of assaults has increased by as much as 30 percent. For these reasons, the Pet Safety Program is needed now more than ever,” said Karen Cheeks-Lomax, CEO of My Sisters’ Place.

The SPCA places victims’ pets with confidential foster families during an owners’ stay at a domestic violence shelter.

Yonkers Nail Parlors And Hair Salons Hope For A phase 2 Reopening On June 11th – By Brian Harrod

Yonkers Personal Care Businesses Need To Prepare For A Phase 2 Reopening Which Could ComeAs Soon As June The 11th

YONKERS: Nail parlors and hair salons in the city of hills will soon be preparing for a phase two reopening, and there could be some big changes for ladies at these beauty establishments.

Personal care establishments in Yonkers have been closed for months and with a potential phase two of reopening just over two weeks away local beauty parlor owners are ready to do whatever it takes to open back up.

Governor Andrew Coumo has not laid out his requirements yet, but some are saying they may include:

Having a front desk with have a sneeze guard and other bariers.

Maybe plexiglass partitions between each attendant station

Salon workers having to cover themselves in protective gear.

Ladies possibly being forced to wait in their cars to limit the number of people in the store.

And even checking the temperatures of workers and clients might be a good idea.

If Westchester County and the Hudson Valley’s state mandated metrics continue in a downward trend, then Yonkers personal care establishments could possibly reopen as early as June 11th.

Cross County Mall Stores In Yonkers Are Open Under Phase 1 – By Brian Harrod

Phase one of the state’s reopening plan allows retail stores — with restrictions — to open back up, after the region met the seven required metrics.

YONKERS: Westchester County is being allowed to slowly begin reopening,

Yonkers’ Cross County Shopping Center says that its retail stores are open for curbside and in-store pickup only.

Shoppers can make purchases from Cross County retailers online or by phone and come to the center for contactless delivery to their vehicles.

However, Macy’s will be open for curbside pickup only beginning June 1.

The store’s hours will be from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. seven days a week.

The center will be instituting the following measures to ensure the safety of customers and workers:

  • Signage will be posted in compliance with all government orders regarding social distancing and personal protective equipment as applicable (masks, gloves, etc.).
  • Directional signage will be added to common areas to provide appropriate spacing for entering and exiting stores.
  • Sanitization stations are strategically located throughout the center.
  • Seating areas and outdoor furniture have been modified to meet social distancing requirements and we have expanded our seating options.
  • Restrooms have been modified to provide appropriate social distancing between individuals and will be sprayed with disinfectant sprayers.
  • During this time, play areas and certain high touch amenities, such as strollers, will not be available. Signage will be posted informing guests.
  • Large event activations will be suspended until further notice.

Representatives from the center said that cleaning protocols and products approved by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention will be used throughout the day on high-trafficked touch areas.

Cross County Shopping Center is located at the junction of Interstate 87 and Cross-County Parkway in Yonkers.

Yonkers Man, On The Run For Two Years, Busted In Maine On Drug Charges

A Yonkers man, with outstanding warrants for weapons charges in New York, was arrested in Maine for allegedly trafficking in crack cocaine.

During a traffic stop on Sunday, Maine State Police encountered 26-year-old Edwin Rodriguez and 23-year-old Sarah Ortiz, both of Yonkers, New York.

Rodriguez is the subject of active Federal arrest warrants related to weapons offenses, was on parole, and had been on the run for 2 years.

He was found to be in possession of crack cocaine, and investigators say there was ample evidence to confirm he had come to Maine for the sole purpose of selling the drugs.

Rodriguez was charged with unlawful trafficking in schedule drugs and taken to the Kennebec County Jail, where bail was set at $50,000 cash.

Ortiz was arrested for refusing to submit to arrest or detention, after she became physically resistive during the incident.

State Police Troopers were assisted at the scene by members of the Augusta Police Department.

“I’d like to take this time to wish you and your loved ones a very peaceful and joyous Memorial Day.

I also ask that you keep members of our armed forces and veterans in your thoughts for their service to our nation.

On this Memorial Day, and every day, let it be our task, every single one of us, to honor the strength, the resolve, and the love these brave Americans felt for each other and for our country.

Let us never forget to always remember and to be worthy of the sacrifice they make in our name.”

VIDEO STATEMENT: From Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano – Memorial Day — Remembering Our Fallen Heroes

MAYOR MIKE SPANO: “On this Memorial Day, we pay tribute to those heroes who laid down their lives to preserve peace, freedom, and the security of our nation, as well as the men and women of our Armed Forces currently serving at home and overseas.

I am proud that the City of Yonkers takes great pride in honoring its Veterans, recognizing them for their courage and commitment to the country.

As we all know too well, this Memorial Day is different from any other we’ve ever had before.

The parades, ceremonies, and gatherings that we cherish as a community all fall by the waist side this year due to a pandemic that has devastated our city, state, and country.
Although I am here to tell you, it has not crushed our spirit.

I was certain not to let Memorial Day go by without rightfully remembering our Yonkers residents who gave their today for our tomorrow.

This is why I held a virtual remembrance ceremony at Washington Park and a Memorial Day Motorcade Ceremony with military and first responder vehicles.

God bless you, God Bless Yonkers, and may God forever bless America.”

STATEMENT: From Councilman John Rubbo

Memorial Day honors the sacrifice made by generations of servicemen and women to protect us, our values, and our way of life. In the course of their duty, they laid down their lives for us. It falls to us to remember them, their stories and those they left behind. And, perhaps more importantly, to be citizens fully worthy of their sacrifice.

Today on Memorial Day, we remember the sacrifices of our fallen soldiers and all that they gave to this country and its future.

Although we may be celebrating this Memorial Day differently, it’s meaning is still very much the same. Take time out of your day today to reflect on the generations of Americans who gave their lives for our freedom.

God bless America and happy Memorial Day.

To pay tribute on Memorial Day the City of Yonkers will be holding a Motorcade which will travel across the City of Yonkers. Please pay tribute by waving along the route.

Please remember to wear a mask and continue to practice social distancing.

The town of Eastchester is located in southern #WestchesterCounty, 22 miles north of Midtown #Manhattan, tucked between the Bronx River and Hutchinson River parkways.

Within the town, you’ll find the villages of #Bronxville and #Tuckahoe as well as the unincorporated hamlet of #Eastchester.

This five-square-mile town has a population of nearly 33,000, and the median age is 42 years old.

Educational attainment is high in the town, with 95 percent of residents high school graduates and 72 percent holding bachelor’s degrees or above.

The median household income is $105,318, nearly twice the national average.

Founded by a settlement of 10 families from Fairfield, Connecticut, Eastchester remained farmland until, like many #Westchester communities, the railroad began to transform the area into a suburban enclave in the mid-1800s.

Around this time, Tuckahoe was earning a reputation as the “marble capital of the world” thanks to rich white marble deposits discovered near the Bronx River.

Today, commuters can reach Grand Central Terminal in roughly 28 minutes on the Metro-North Railroad’s Harlem Line from the Tuckahoe, #Crestwood and #Scarsdale stations.

Locally, great shopping can be found at the Vernon Hills shopping center area which includes Lord & Taylor, Trader Joe’s, Banana Republic, Brooks Brothers, West Elm and other retail destinations.

Housing in the #TownOfEastchester is 75 percent owner occupied and 25 percent renter occupied, with median home values hovering around $579,200.

The unincorporated area of Eastchester, in particular, offers a wide range of housing types, from multimillion-dollar estates to reasonably priced apartment homes.

In the Lakeshore Drive area, tucked between Lake Isle Park and the reservoir, you’ll find grand homes in an array of architectural styles – modern, Mediterranean and ranch, to name a few – rarely found in older Westchester communities.

In historic Bronxville, meanwhile, sprawling estates in classic styles, such as Georgian, Queen Anne, Tudor and Colonial Revival, dot the landscape on impressive, manicured grounds.

Tuckahoe housing stock tends to lie on the more modest end of the spectrum with many three- and four-bedroom homes built in the 1920s.

With a combined enrollment of nearly 3,200 students,

The Eastchester Union Free School District includes three schools for elementary grades, a middle school and high school.Students at Eastchester High School can choose from 20 Advanced Placement courses, and 79 percent go on to four-year institutions.

The Tuckahoe Union Free School District educates approximately 1,100 students at William E. Cottle Elementary School, Tuckahoe Middle School and Tuckahoe High School.

The Bronxville School, run by the Bronxville Union Free School District, serves 1,700 students in grades K-12 in a single building.

Private schools in Eastchester include The Chapel School, Bronxville Montessori, St. Joseph School, Sarah Lawrence Early Childhood Center, Annunciation School and Immaculate Conception School.

Its Twin Lakes Farm equestrian center is the largest in Westchester County and offers boarding space, indoor and outdoor arenas, an academy and riding teams.

Westchester’s oldest park is The Bronx River Parkway Reservation, an 807-acre paradise with ponds, wooden bridges and lush foliage making it the perfect spot for running, biking and walking.

In 1979, the Town of Eastchester purchased the 116-acre former private club that now makes up the now-public Lake Isle Country Club.

The facility provides affordable recreation to community residents, including five swimming pools, an 18-hole golf course, tennis courts plus an array of community events and classes.

In addition to parks, a number of entries on the National Register of Historic Places dot the Eastchester area, including the Bronxville Post Office, Bronxville Women’s Club, Lawrence Park Historic District, the Masterton-Dusenberry House, The Marble Schoolhouse and Tuckahoe High School.
