LOCAL CRYPTO BANK FAILURE: Signature Bank Closed by Regulators
Over this past weekend, two banks – Signature Bank – collapsed. To protect the depositors, the regulators seized control after the banks failed to meet customer withdrawal requests.
Per the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) statement released yesterday…
Signature Bank, New York, NY, was closed on Sunday, March 12, 2023 by the New York State Department of Financial Services, which appointed the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) as receiver. To protect depositors, the FDIC transferred all the deposits and substantially all of the assets of Signature Bank to Signature Bridge Bank, N.A., a full-service bank that will be operated by the FDIC as it markets the institution to potential bidders. Banking activities will resume Monday, March 13, 2023, including on-line banking. Depositors and borrowers will automatically become customers of Signature Bridge Bank, N.A. and will continue to have uninterrupted customer service and access to their funds by ATM, debit cards, and writing checks in the same manner as before. Signature Bank’s official checks will continue to clear. Loan customers should continue making loan payments as usual. The transfer of all the deposits was completed under the systemic risk exception approved earlier today. All depositors of the institution will be made whole. No losses will be borne by the taxpayers. Shareholders and certain unsecured debt holders will not be protected. It focused on wealthy clients and built personal relationships with them. For most of its history, it had offices only in the New York City area. In the late 2010s, it began to expand geographically and in terms of services, though it was most noted for its 2018 decision to open itself to the cryptocurrency industry. By 2021, cryptocurrency businesses had represented 30 percent of its deposits. Banking officials in the state of New York closed the bank on March 12, 2023, two days after the failure of Silicon Valley Bank (SVB). After SVB failed and in light of the closure of the cryptocurrency-friendly Silvergate Bank earlier in the week, nervous customers withdrew more than $10 billion in deposits. It was the third-largest bank failure in U.S. history. The FDIC was appointed as the bank’s receiver and immediately established Signature Bridge Bank, N.A. (see Bridge bank) which the FDIC would operate as it marketed its assets to bidders. The FDIC appointed Greg D. Carmichael, former president and CEO of Fifth Third Bancorp, as the bridge bank’s CEO. As of December 2022, 90 percent of $89 billion in bank deposits exceeded the maximum insured by the FDIC. |

YONKERS POLICE DEPARTMENT: Deadly Blaze In New York Apartment Building Likely Caused By Cannabis Grow Lamp
YONKERS: Police said on Friday that the cause of the deadly five-alarm fire in Yonkers, New York has been linked to cannabis-grow equipment found in one of the apartments in the building.
What Happened: The five-alarm fire broke out at about 1:15 a.m. Wednesday at the 95-unit complex on the Bronx River Road in #WestchesterCounty.
#Yonkers first responders, including firefighters, police and EMS began evacuating residents and fighting the blaze, which had reached the roof. Dozens of firefighters and several residents suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
Cannabis Grow Light
Arson investigators determined that the likely cause and origin of the blaze was an electric heating lamp being used to cultivate six marijuana plants that a resident was growing for personal use. The #YonkersPoliceDepartment reported that the lamp was hanging on a hook above the small cannabis grow but broke, sparked on the floor and started the blaze in the first-floor apartment.
Investigators said once the resident discovered the fire, he raised the alarm and alerted his neighbors.
“The tragedy of this incident is compounded by how avoidable it was,” said Yonkers police commissioner #ChrisSapienza. “We have seen before how dangerous these high-powered devices can be, and without regulations or guidelines to protect the public, people are unnecessarily being placed at risk – marijuana laws need to be fixed, be it cultivation or smoke shops; our communities demand it.”
The NY Office of Cannabis Management has yet to issue regulations governing home cultivation of cannabis, which means that it is not legal, city officials said.
Around 65 people were sheltered in a local community center north of the fire scene, with the assistance of the Office of Emergency Management. Fire departments from other jurisdictions provided aid to combat the fire, which was brought under control hours later, but not before claiming one life.
#MichaelDamiano, 67, a resident of the fourth floor, was identified by police Friday as the person who died from injuries suffered in the fire.

YONKERS EDUCATOR: The National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (NIAAA) Named Michael DeSimone Of The Charter School Of Educational Excellence (CSEE) A Certified Master Athletic Administrator
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: #YonkersYonkers’ Charter School Of Educational Excellence Athletic Director Named Certified Master Athletic Administrator
PRESS RELEASE: The National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (NIAAA) Named Michael DeSimone Of The Charter School Of Educational Excellence (CSEE) A Certified Master Athletic Administrator.
YONNKERS: The #NIAAA cited DeSimone, the school’s athletic director, for his contributions to the school and his ongoing professional development in the field of interscholastic sports administration.
DeSimone has worked at Yonkers’ only charter school since 2011. A year after his arrival, DeSimone started the school’s first sports team for basketball.
Since then, he launched all the K-12 school’s sports teams, which today include 21 interscholastic programs at the elementary, middle- and high-school levels.
“It’s not enough,” DeSimone said of the charter school’s programs. “We really want to make sure that we give every student an opportunity to participate, whether it’s an interscholastic sport, intermural sport or an afterschool activity.”
DeSimone will expand the charter school’s sports program with track and field teams. He also intends to introduce junior varsity teams for freshman and sophomores in 2024.
“Some sports have 50 to 60 kids trying out and we can only pick 15 of them, so there is a need for more programs,” he said.
The Charter School of Educational Excellence successfully propels student athletes into college, with several former students playing at the NCAA level. One standout is Tyler Roche, a junior at St. John’s University and a pitcher for the baseball team.
Roche is expected to enter the Major League Baseball draft.
The recognition by the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association is the latest recognition for DeSimone. In 2021, the group Coaching Corps named him a Game Changer of the Month for his work at the charter school.
DeSimone said that being a game changer is a matter of building allies and support.
“A game changer is just somebody who has done a good job getting others to see the vision and the philosophy that you have, and demonstrating that it works,” said DeSimone. “We’re able to carry it out because we have a coaching staff that is extremely committed to our student success, more so off the field than on the field.
