Home Depot website exposed personal data: Consumer Reports

Consumer Reports said Thursday it found personal data from about 8,000 individuals that was unprotected on Home Depot Inc.'s website, although it has now been removed. Yonkers, New York-based Consumer Reports, a nonprofit independent organization that researches and publishes product ratings and reviews, said in an article released Thursday that, based on an anonymous tip, it found a site that hosted Excel spreadsheets of customer records, including full names, phone numbers, mailing addresses and email addresses of about 8,000 people, as well as other information chronicling the apparent installation complaints of each customer of the Atlanta-based retailer.

Pennsylvania-based InventHelp is working to submit this idea, the CLEAN SEAT, to companies in the hopes of their good faith review. "I wanted to be protected from unsanitary surfaces while using public restrooms, and I heard people complain that regular covers slide off during use," said an inventor from Yonkers, N.Y. "For this reason, I devised a toilet-seat cover that offers more complete coverage and protection than what is currently available on the market."

Westchester officials announce joint technology initiative for 4 cities

The Westchester County Association announced Thursday that Westchester's four largest cities will be signing a smart city initiative for technology. Yonkers, White Plains, Mount Vernon and New Rochelle will receive Gigabit Broadband, which will allow the cities to share technology and bring faster internet speed to every home, business, health care and educational organization in the next three to five years.
