Kids Get Backpacks, Enjoy Barbecue From Yonkers-Based Leake And Watts

The nonprofit's family preventive services component makes its impact at the annual festive barbecue, which sends "a powerful message," according to the school. "Education is the best way for children to rise above adversity and achieve success," explained Paul Martin, director of preventive services at the Yonkers agency, which supports 11,000 children, adults and families in the New York metropolitan area.

Astorino Promotes Free Summer Vaccine Clinics

Westchester County Executive Robert P. Astorino is reminding residents that health department vaccine clinics are open on Fridays all summer long to help families prepare for jobs, camp and the next school year. The Westchester County Health Department will provide free immunizations by appointment on Fridays in White Plains and Yonkers to adults, children and students of all ages who are uninsured or whose insurance doesn't cover vaccines.

Campaign helps kids to read

The United Way of Westchester and Putnam kicked off its "United To Read" campaign today at the Riverfront Library in Yonkers. The program wants make sure parents in all income levels are talking to their children, getting them the health care they need, and reading to their children starting at birth.

The Loukoumi Make A Difference Foundation united over 50,000 children across the country on National Make A Difference Day, October 22, 2016, as part of its annual Make A Difference With Loukoumi Project. Loukoumi and author Nick Katsoris also embarked on a school bus filled with children and supporters that day, all doing good deeds at various bus stops in the Westchester and Bronx NY area including The Westchester Children's Museum, Fordham University, Finding Hope: The New Yonkers Animal Shelter and Holy Trinity Church in New Rochelle.
