Deal Made To Rebuild ‘Crumbling’ Yonkers Schools

Legislation has been passed that will afford Yonkers millions of dollars to begin rebuilding "crumbling" schools and invest in new construction throughout the district. Both houses of the New York State Legislature approved legislation sponsored by Assemblymembers Shelley Mayer and Gary Pretlow on Wednesday night that authorized accelerated funds to continue progress of the "Yonkers City School District Joint Schools Construction and Modernization Act."

Police beef up presence at Yonkers Middle High School

Parents in Yonkers are questioning why there has been an increased police presence outside the Yonkers Middle High School for the last two days. According to the school district, parents received a "robocall" around 11:45 a.m. on Thursday saying that an incident had happened in the community that caused the Yonkers Police Department to be stationed outside the school on Rockland Avenue.

Nominations Open for Yonkers Teacher of the Year

The Yonkers Kiwanis Club, in partnership, with the City of Yonkers and Yonkers Board of Education, will present the 2017 Teacher of the Year Awards to three deserving members of the Yonkers Public Schools faculty. Teachers will be selected based on nominations submitted by students, parents, teachers and administrators, according to a release from Yonkers Public Schools.

Yonkers 4th-grader faces gun charges

A fourth-grader from a Yonkers public school is facing charges after a gun was found in his backpack, according to police. A school district spokesperson tells News 12, police were called to School 13 on McLean Avenue around 3:30 p.m. after a teacher reported a weapon was discovered in a student's backpack.
