YONKERS: The Municipal Housing Authority for the City of Yonkers (MHACY) Ceo Wilson Kimball is administering new vouchers provided by the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) for Yonkers residents
Westhab will receive 124 Section 8 vouchers at nine of Westhab’s properties in Yonkers including those on Knowles Street, Livingston Avenue, Waverly Street, Elm Street, Lawrence Street, and Bruce Avenue. The vouchers will ensure that tenants pay no more than 30% of their income towards rent.
Andrew Germansky, Senior Vice President of Real Estate at Westhab, says said that the vouchers will increase income at the properties while slightly reducing rent for many of the residents, who already have affordable apartments that are subsidized.
He adds that the extra income income from the Section 8 vouchers that could help solve Yonkers homeless problem in downtown Yonkers will allow Westhab to hire additional staff.
This summer Mayor Mike Spano, Kimball Wilson, and MHACY Board Chairman James Landy got hundreds of new Section 8 vouchers from the federal government, because of the pandemic – but they have done a poor job of making residents aware of the vouchers that could help them obtain affordable apartments in the city of hills.
Now more than six months later 124 section 8 vouchers are being given to Westhab tenants, who are already in affordable apartments that are subsidized – so Westhab can earn a few more bucks and hire more people.
There are least a hundred Yonkers folks that are homeless on any given night and shouldn’t we focus these Section 8 vouchers on helping these vulnerable residents first, instead of trying to help Westhab increase its payroll?
